Spencer Compton

Spencer Compton, 1st Earl of Wilmington, KG, KB, PC (1673 - July 2, 1743) was First Lord of the Treasury of Great Britain from 1742 until his death in 1743. Although he is commonly recorded as the second Prime Minister of Great Britain, the ministry was in fact led by John Carteret, 2nd Earl Granville, Secretary of State for the Northern Department. The office of First Lord of the Treasury did not become definitively linked with that of Prime Minister until the end of the 18th century.
