Walter Wangerin, Jr.
Professor Walter Wangerin, Jr. (b. 13 February 1944 Portland, Oregon) is an American author and educator, specializing in books offering practical theological guidance regarding marriage (As For Me And My House), parenting (Little Lamb, Who Made Thee?), and grief (Mourning Into Dancing). Like his father, he is a Lutheran pastor. He has received many awards, including Gold Medallion Book Award in 1996 for The Book of God: The Bible as a Novel and, in 2001, for Paul, A Novel. The Book of the Dun Cow was recognized in 1978 as The New York Times Best Children's Book of the Year and also won the National Book Award in 1980.[1]
Professor Wangerin occupies the Jochum Chair at Valparaiso University, where he is professor of theology, professor of English, and Writer in Residence.[2] He was the host of the Lutheran Vespers radio program from 1994 to 2005.[3]
He has suffered from cancer, and wrote several letters to friends, collected in Letters From the Land of Cancer (2010).[4]
