The English explorer Sir Francis Drake was the second to sail around the world (after Magellan). During one of his trips to the New World he discovered the potato, although some claim that Sir Walter Raleigh beat him to it.

Francis Drake's ship was the English galleon Pelican, which was later renamed the Golden Hinde.
