Mandatory overtime

Mandatory overtime is the practice by employers of requiring employees to work more than 40 hours per workweek[1]. It saves employers the expense of finding and training new employees when more work is needed. Requiring existing employees to work more and paying them time and a half, as is customary for overtime work, is typically cheaper than recruiting new employees.
