The Christmas Truce was a miraculous and otherwise unexplained cessation of combat on or near Christmas Day on the Western Front during World War I, in 1914, among combatants who would otherwise engage in some of the most brutal warfare in world history.

It was a spirit that swept the Western Front without authorization and direction, as men came out of their trenches and exchanged gifts and good will to the other side. Some even played games of soccer.
