Colocation is when a local phone company has its telecommunication switches within the central office of a competing local exchange company (LEC).
More generally, the term Co Location means the ability any company to place its own telecommunication equipment in the offices of the local phone company and join the equipment to function together. The purpose is to save money, obtain a better interconnection, solve problems easier and generally obtain better service.
