Alexander Dubcek

Alexander Dubček (1921–1992) attempted to reform the Communist government in Czechoslovakia in 1968, when he briefly served as its prime minister. He allowed greater freedom of speech in Czechoslovakia. Dubcek was himself a socialist, but the Soviet Union sent troops to stop his reforms.
Later, after the overthrow of communism in Czechoslovakia two decades later, Dubcek became speaker of the federal Czechoslovak parliament.
