Philip Dormer Stanhope, 4th Earl of Chesterfield, born in London, September 22, 1694 (Died March 24, 1773) was a British statesman and prolific letter writer.
Lord Stanhope, as he was known until his father's death in 1726, was educated at Cambridge. The death of Queen Anne and the accession of George I opened up a career for him. His relative James Stanhope, one of the King's favored ministers, procured for him the place of Gentleman of the Bedchamber to the Prince of Wales.
