Kilmarnock
Kilmarnock is a large market town in Ayrshire, in the Scottish Lowlands south of Glasgow.
Historically, important local industries have included coal-mining, carpet-making (including the carpets of the Titanic) and locomotive manufacture. The town is a hotbed of freemasonry and it is difficult for non-masons to obtain any worthwhile employment there. As a result of this many inhabitants of "Killie" commute daily to Glasgow.
A hat known as the 'Kilmarnock bunnet' (bonnet) has its origins in the town.
Robert Burns' first collection of poems was published in Kilmarnock.
Kilmarnock Football Club is the oldest professional football club in Scotland.
Kilmarnock's intellectual hub is the Dick Institute, founded 1901, which house the town's library, art gallery and museum.
