Health Information Technology (HIT) means the effort to convert medical records to electronic form, enabling easy access, monitoring, and perhaps rationing.
For those whose medical records are already in electronic form, estimates are that "as many as 250,000 Americans have had their medical identification stolen and misused."[1]
