A Battery is a device that stores chemical energy and produces electric current. Batteries may be single-use or rechargeable.

Small batteries

These are some common sizes used for flashlights and electronic devices. They are described by the chemistry used in the battery. Single-use batteries are usually described as alkaline while rechargeable batteries may be Nickel-Cadmium (NiCad) or Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH). [1] [2]

  • 9V

Large batteries

Large batteries are usually of the rechargeable lead-acid type. Applications include starting batteries for automobiles and deep cycle batteries for leisure use.[3] Starting batteries are usually 12 volt batteries containing six lead-acid cells. Large vehicles, such as trucks and buses may have two 12 volt batteries connected in series to give 24 volts.

Even larger batteries are used for powering Submarines[4] and Electric Vehicles, such as forklift trucks.[5]
