Life Is Beautiful

Life Is Beautiful is a black comedy about the Holocaust, presented as an elaborate game (or reality show) by a father trying to shield his son from Nazi horrors. The fake situation that the father pushes on his son is used as a way to explain the chronic shortage of food and other goods the family suffers from during World War II. It was nominated for an Academy Award in 1998, but lost out to Shakespeare in Love.
