Jane Austen, author of Pride and Prejudice, the 200-year-old classic novel of upper-class British leisure society.
She wrote her first two novels ten years before they came out, and later re-issued them as Sense and Sensibility (1811) and Pride and Prejudice (1813). Mansfield Park and Emma followed in 1814 and 1815.
Novel outlines
In Pride and Prejudice, the two antagonists are the immensely wealthy Mr. Darcy and the middle-class Elizabeth Bennett. Her prejudice is gradually broken down by his kindness while his pride is tempered somewhat by falling in love with her.
