Box Hill

Box Hill, in the North Downs north-east of Dorking, Surrey, is a popular place of recreation for the people of south London. It has extensive views over the Weald to the South Downs. Its popularity as a resort has lasted for at least two c3enturies, as it was the scene of a pic-nic party in the novel ''Emma'' by Jane Austen. The crest of the hill contains a number of Second Worls War fortifications, as the hill commands the strategic Mole Gap, which contains road and rail connections between London and the south coast.
