Clyde Lee Chambliss, Jr. (born c. 1969), is an engineer from Prattville, Alabama, who has since 2014 represented District 30 in the Alabama State Senate. A Republican, his district encompasses Autauga, Chilton, Coosa, Elmore, and Tallapoosa counties in the eastern portion of his state.
Chambliss graduated with a degree in civil engineering from the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa. He is the principal of his own company, Chambliss Engineering. He is a graduate of the program "Leadership Alabama." He served three terms on the Autauga County Commission, the last two as chairman. He is a deacon and Sunday school teacher at Heritage Baptist Church in Prattville. He and his wife, the former Tara Herring, have three daughters.[1]
In 2014, the incumbent Republican senator for District 30, Bryan Taylor, did not seek reelection. Chambliss, who was serving on the Prattville City Council, defeated an intra-party rival, Harris Garner of Millbrook, in the Republican runoff primary held on July 15. Garner won only in Elmore County.[2] Two other Republicans, Suzelle Josey and Bill Harris, were eliminated in the first primary. In the November 4 general election, Chambliss faced no Democrat opponent but defeated an Independent, Bryan Morgan, 22,916 (79.9 percent) to 5,653 (19.7 percent).[3]
Chambliss sits on these committees: (1) Agriculture, Conservation, and Forestry, (2) County and Municipal Government, (3) Finance and Taxation General Fund, (4) Fiscal Responsibility and Economic Development, and (5) Transportation and Energy.[1]
In 2015, Senator Chambliss voted to establish public charter schools in Alabama and to require couples who marry to sign a marriage contract, rather than to obtain a marriage license. He did not vote on the bill which forbids the expansion of Medicaid in his state. He voted to increase the cigarette tax, which passed the Senate 21-13. In 2016, he voted to prohibit the removal of monuments from public property, a measure that passed the Senate, 22-9. He voted to prohibit abortion providers from locating their facilities near schools. He voted to permit concealed handguns to be carried in vehicles without a permit. He voted against the establishment a state lottery, but the legislation passed the Senate 21-12. In 2017, he voted to permit the large Briarwood Presbyterian Church in Birmingham to establish its own police force. He voted against the bill which prohibits employers in Alabama from inquiring about past criminal histories of job applicants. He voted for the use of nitrogen in carrying out death penalty executions.[4]
