Humber Bridge

When built, in the late 1970s and early 1980s the Humber Bridge was the longest single-span suspension bridge in the world. It crosses the River Humber between East Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire, but carries little traffic and is mockingly known (to those on the Yorkshire side) as the 'bridge to nowhere'. Its construction had the political underpinning of a wish to unite the two banks of the Humber in a new county - Humberside - which was instituted in 1974 but lasted barely two decades before its abolition.
