Saint Columbanus (540–615AD) was an Irish Christian missionary who founded a number of monasteries in France and Italy. His most notable monasteries were at Luxeuil in present-day France and at Bobbio in Italy. For many centuries, these monasteries were among the most important in Europe. Many monks went forth from Luxeuil to found other monasteries in Europe. The bones of St Columbanus are held in the Church in Bobbio.
