Social promotion is the practice of promoting a schoolchild to the next grade, to keep him with his peers, regardless of whether he is capable of doing grade-level work.

Some advocates of social promotion argue that keeping children together by age is an intrinsically important factor, or that being "kept back" would be inexcusably painful for a child emotionally.

Some opponents of social promotion argue that cheats the child of an education and can hide teacher ineptitude.
