Chester A. Arthur (1829-1886) served as President from 1881 to 1885. When the father learned of his son's birth he "danced up and down the room." He served as a lawyer in New York and later during the civil war was put in charge of equipping New York, both civilians and soldiers. He was a stalwart before coming to the presidency and was chosen as the running mate of James Garfield. After Garfield's death at the hands of an angry stalwart he became President and disappointed his stalwart friends. [1]
