Leap second

A leap second is a time period of one second that may be added or subtracted from the current time to improve the synchronisation between the Coordinated Universal Time standard (UTC) as measured by atomic clocks and time based on the rotation of the Earth.
The next leap second will be on 30 June 2012 when a second will be added to UTC.
It has been proposed that leap seconds are abandoned, with a decision possible in early 2012.[1]
