Southern Baptists of Texas Convention
The Southern Baptists of Texas Convention (SBTC) is a state convention aligned with the Southern Baptist Convention. It is headquartered in the Dallas-Fort Worth suburb of Grapevine, Texas.
During the "Conservative Resurgence" within the SBC, while the national convention was adopting a more conservative theology, the Baptist General Convention of Texas (BGCT) was generally resisting the national movement and seeking to align with the more moderate Cooperative Baptist Fellowship. Unable to convince the BGCT to follow the national convention's trend, conservative leaders and churches elected to form a separate state convention, which began operating in 1998.
SBTC adheres to the Baptist Faith and Message 2000 edition; churches who wish to affiliate with the SBTC must also adhere to the BF&M 2000. Notably, the SBTC bylaws prohibit it from incurring debt (though affiliated churches are not prohibited from doing so).
SBTC does not own or operate any higher educational facilities or other ministries, but has affiliations with the following:
- Jacksonville College, a junior college in Jacksonville, Texas; the college is owned by the Baptist Missionary Association of America (BMAA), a Baptist denomination unaffiliated with the SBC
- Criswell College, a college in Dallas; the college was owned by the First Baptist Church of Dallas, but is now totally independent
- Texas Baptist Home for Children, a children's home in Waxahachie, owned and operated by BMAA
- East Texas Baptist Family Ministries, a ministry in Timpson, independently owned and operated
