Samuel Provoost (1742-1815) was the first Episcopal bishop of New York and a graduate of King's College, now Columbia University. He was ordained in 1766 after studying in Cambridge.

He became assistant minister of the renowned Trinity parish in New York City, but was forced to resign in 1771 due to his sympathy with the Patriots against the British. He returned as Trinity's rector in 1784, became bishop of New York in 1786 and was consecrated in England in 1787.

In 1785, Provoost served as chaplain to the Continental Congress. In 1789, he served as the first chaplain of the U.S. Senate.
