Romulus Augustus was the last emperor of the Roman Empire. His name translates to, "Romulus, the Little Augustus," a reference to his young age.

He was deposed in AD 476 when he was nine years old, after a 'reign' of only one year. Put in place by his father, a military general, after a coup the previous year, the empire had been on fumes for quite some time. The conqueror did not take the title of Emperor. This marked the end of the Roman Empire in the West, although the Byzantine Empire continued in the East, ruled from Constantinople for almost 1000 more years.

Also, the Ostrogoths continued to rule Italy in a fashion as close to the Roman way of life as possible, to some degree of success.[1]
