Gavrilo Princip (1894 - 1918) was a 19-year-old Serbian nationalist whose assassination of the Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the throne of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and his wife in Sarajevo on June 28, 1914, sparked World War I. Princip, who was the member of a terrorist group known as the Black Hand, died in prison less than four years later.
