Menachem Begin

Menachem Begin was an active member of what could be called a terrorist group before Israel's existence. Among other questionable choices, he and his associates caused the death of 300 civilians when they blew up a hotel. Nevertheless, in time he rose to political prominence in Israel and became Israel's leader.

He was the leader of Israel during the Camp David Accords. He and the Egyptian leader, Anwar el-Sadat along with United States President Jimmy Carter, negotiated a peace treaty at Camp David together. It was the first peace treaty for Israel with an Arab neighbor. (Even though Egyptians are not literally Arabs, they are considered and consider themselves to be part of the Arab world.) The Sinai peninsula, occupied since the 6 day war was returned to Egypt. A future deal that was to include the west bank never materialized.
