Jericho
Jericho is a city in Israel by the Jordan River, and the second oldest city that has been discovered[1]. The city is mentioned extensively in the Bible.
In the book of Joshua, Jericho is taken by the Israelites with the help of God.
"When the trumpets sounded, the people shouted, and at the sound of the trumpet, when the people gave a loud shout, the wall collapsed; so every man charged straight in, and they took the city." (Joshua 6:20)
The site believed to be the ruins of the City of Jericho described in the Bible has been excavated several times:
- 1868 - first excavation
- 1907 - first scientific excavation
- 1930/36 - second excavation
- 1952/58 - third excavation
- recent - forth excavation
The first and third excavations found that the city was unoccupied during the time that Joshua was believed to have led the Israeli armies. The second excavation showed it was occupied and has the most recent excavation. Dr. Byrant G. Wood is a notable archeologist who asserts that Jericho was occupied at the time of its attack as the Bible states.[2][3] At the moment there is no consensus in the archaeological community on when or how Jericho was destroyed.
