Elfward, (c. 903 - 2 August 924) son (possibly illegitimate) of Edward the Elder is sometimes said to have reigned for a short time after his father's death. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicles says only:

”King Edward passed away, in Mercia, at Farndon, and his son Ælfweard very soon after – sixteen days – at Oxford, their bodies lie at Winchester, Æthelstan was chosen king...”
