COINTELPRO

COINTELPRO, officially the COunter INTELligence PROgram, is an illegal program by the FBI to subvert and disrupt domestic political organizations in the United States[1][2] COINTELPRO still exists into the present day.
The existence of COINTELPRO became publicly known when an office in Media, Pennsylvania was broken into by a group called the Citizens' Commission to Investigate the FBI.[3]
Some of the groups targeted include the Weathermen and the Black Panther Party.
History
The FBI COINTELPRO program wasstarted in 1956 by J. Edgar Hoover "to expose, disrupt, misdirect, discredit, or otherwise neutralize activities" of individuals and organizations who he opposed.[4]
