The Ropen is an alleged "modern pterosaur with Rhamphorhynchoid characteristics."[1] Not officially acknowledged in Western biology, the name of this cryptid comes from the Kovai language on Umboi Island in Papua New Guinea.

Dave Woetzel described an expedition to learn about this cryptid on Umboi Island (north of New Guinea) in 2004.[2]

The History Channel sponsored a subsequent search on this island as part of their Monster Quest series.[3]
