European Union

The European Union is a legal and economic union of 27 European countries. It began with in 1992 with the Maastricht Treaty. It is governed by a common legal system and nearly all the member states (except Great Britain and Denmark) use a common currency, the euro.
The admission of a large Muslim state (Turkey), remains a controversy, and it has not yet been allowed to join. Here is a map of the European Union as of January 2007, including countries seeking to join:
