Big Sandy is a town in east Texas.

From 1972-1974 the local high school (the Big Sandy Wildcats, not to be confused with another high school in Deep East Texas named Big Sandy) won three state championships in football. Notable players on that team were David Overstreet (who later played for the Miami Dolphins) and Lovie Smith (who later coached at the college and professional levels).

It was the former home of Ambassador College, which was affiliated with the Worldwide Church of God before the denomination later renounced the teachings of its founder, Herbert W. Armstrong. The campus is now the headquarters of the Institute in Basic Life Principles, the controversial legalistic sect (some go so far as to label it a cult) known for its teachings on strict obedience to authority (the Duggar clan, featured on TLC, were adherents).
