Tom McMahon is the current mayor of Reading, Pennsylvania. He is up for reelection in 2007.
Illegal Aliens
Tom McMahon is a strong supporter of Illegal Aliens where he was quoted as them being "welcome with open arms". McMahon's more famous quote was at a Latino rally where he was quoted as saying, "It's wonderful to hear spanish spoken through the city". "[1]
Fighting Crime
Mayor Tom McMahon's ideas to curb crime have not gone well either. His main proposal was to create an art gallery known as The Goggle Works. A 9 million dollar pork project paid with state taxpayer money.
Exploiting Officer Scott Wertz
After Reading Police Officer Scott Wertz got murdered in cold blood by Cletus Rivera, Mayor McMahon rather then fight these thugs that continue to fuel the criminal element, he chose to exploit Officer Wertz, and his family to justify a property tax increase to "fight crime" when voters rejected it knowing it would continue to go into the pockets of Mayor McMahon who would tell you to give a criminal a hug to make him feel better.
The Great Trash Collection Debate
On November, 2006 Mayor McMahon was struck a stinging defeat by city voters, when his trash bill was defeated. The main reason for the defeat was when Mayor McMahon made the issure more about himself then the citizens of the city after in a burst of anger at The Marvel Ranch tore down signs in the window that were against his trash bill. All of this happened right in front of Reading Police Chief Bill Heim. While it is illegal to do what the Mayor did, Cheif Heim refused to enforce the law and arrest him. [1]
The Anti-American Mayor
Mayor McMahon to this day blames America's greatness, and our free market for the slow business growth in the city as stated in a USA Today article. [2]
