A sexually transmitted disease caused by the organism Neisseria gonorrhoeae. It can be spread by oral, vaginal, or anal intercourse. In women, the symptoms can range from none, to a foul vaginal discharge, to a serious abdominal infection known as Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID). This can lead to infertility.
In men, symptoms are usually a purulent urethral discharge with burning.
Gonorrhea in the throat can look much like "strep throat", that is, a red, swollen throat, with pus on the tonsils.
Antibiotics are typically prescribed as treatment.
