Apartheid (Afrikaans for Separateness), is a social and political policy of racial segregation and discrimination enforced by white minority governments in South Africa from 1948 to 1994.

Nelson Mandela was jailed for attempting to over throw the government.[1] When the black population of South Africa was given the right to vote in 1994, he was elected President.

Former President Jimmy Carter infamously referred to the Israeli occupation of Palestine as "apartheid."
