President Rutherford Hayes had chosen not to run for another term leaving the office for President open to all compeditors. The Republican party was divided at the time between two factions called Stalwarts and Half-Breeds. The Half-Breeds managed to nominate James A. Garfield as the Republican candidate. Garfield, trying to appease the stalwarts, requested Chester A. Arthur, as stalwart, to be his running mate. The democrats nominated General, Winfield S. Hancock, as their candidate. [1] The results showed:
| candidates | popular vote | electoral vote |
|---|---|---|
| James A. Garfield | 4, 453, 295 | 214 |
| Winfield S. Hancock | 4, 414, 082 | 155 |
| James B. Weaver | 308, 578 | 0 |
| John P. St.John | 150, 369 | 0 |
