Altrincham
Altrincham is a market town in the Bucklow Hundred of Cheshire. Located near the M56 motorway, it is around 8 miles south-west of central Manchester, 10 miles east of Warrington and 25 miles north-east of the county town, Chester. Altrincham has a population of around 50,000. Historically an administrative borough in its own right, Altrincham today forms a part of the Trafford metropolitan borough.
The expansion of the Bridgewater Canal in the mid-late 18th century stimulated industrial and economic growth in Altrincham. The town became known for its vegetables, and these were transported to Manchester to be sold. The growth of the railway network in the 19th century allowed Altrincham to become a commuter town for Manchester cotton magnates.[1] The town boasts an association football club, Altrincham F.C., and three ice hockey teams: Altrincham Aces, Manchester Storm and Trafford Tornadoes.
