A Federally funded research and development center (FFRDC) is a research facility, operated by a university or corporation, which works in partnership with the Federal government to meet certain research needs that "cannot be met as effectively by existing in-house or contractor resources".

The first FFRDC, the RAND Corporation, was formed in 1947. As of 2026, there are 42 FFRDCs.

An FFRDC is similar to a University Affiliated Research Center (UARC) except that FFRDCs are prohibited from competing for Federal work, whereas a UARC may do so.
