A layoff, which under union rules was once a mere temporary sending home of workers due to economic conditions, has by the 21st century become the final termination of employment of many workers at a company or in the federal government. The reasons are typically financial difficulties or, other than in the government, merely to increase profits. Workers laid off today are rarely called back to work in the future by the same company.
Many layoffs nationwide can be a sign of an economic downturn or recession.
