Horatio Alger (1834 - 1899) is the author of over 100 books for boys where the heroes rise from rags to riches through virtue and hard work. Among some of his more popular works from that time period are:

  • Ragged Dick (1867)
  • Luck and Pluck (1869)
  • Sink of Swim (1870)
