There is a lot of confusion about slavery in Islamic society. Since the Ottoman sultans functioned as divine monarchs in a sense all Ottoman subjects were their slaves. Moreover since in an Islamic state no Muslim may legally be enslaved the act of converting those taken in the devshirme acted as automatic legal manumission. Saying that they never became free roughly equates to saying that medieval Christian nobles were never free of their liege-lord, since they owed their liege service for life, just as janissaries served the sultan. --WOVcenter 23:52, 10 March 2007 (EST)
