Persephone

In Greek mythology, Persephone is the daughter of Demeter and Zeus.
Hades was said to have abducted Persephone to be his bride. Demeter, having lost her daughter, neglected the seasons as she searched for Persephone. The resultant draught and starvation brought the abduction to Zeus' attention, and he ordered for Persephone's release. To ensure that he retains his queen, Hades tricked Persephone into eating Pomegranate seeds, which forced her to return to the underworld for six months each year. This story was used to explain the changing of the seasons - when Demeter is reunited with Persephone, the earth is fertile; when Persephone departs for the underworld, the earth is barren.
