A blocked punt happens in football when a player for the defense makes contact with the football just after it has been punted. If the team that blocked the punt recovers the football then they receive possession resulting in a first down. If the punting team recovers the blocked punt behind the line of scrimmage, depending on the down, it may or may not result in a turnover of possession.
