French fries

French fries are a food made from potatoes. They are very popular in America and in England they are called "chips". French fries are often eaten with the addition of ketchup, as many believe that this improves the flavor.

"French" fries are actually Belgian, not French. In Belgium and the Netherlands they are called frites and are often served with mayonnaise.

Near the start of the Iraq War, a wave of anti-French sentiment briefly swept the United States over France's refusal to join or support the U.S.-led coalition. As a protest against France, for a while the Congressional cafeteria refused to use the name "French fries," serving them under the substitute name "Freedom fries." The name "Freedom fries" was occasionally used by other U.S. establishments that wished to express support for the war, but did not catch on.
