The "balance of power" was an equilibrium of power in Europe after Napoleon whereby aggression by one nation would be offset by the combined power of other nations. This balance of power prevented one nation from imposing its will on other nations.

A maintenance of the balance of power is key to the philosophy of power politics or realist politics.

A famous balance of power is the Concert of Europe between 1815-1822.
