The liberty bell was not first rung to read the Declaration of Independence in 1776. That is its most famous ringing, but it arrived in Pennsylvania in 1752. Did it just sit there not being used for 24 years? I've seen the thing in person. The little historical museum you walk through before you see the bell itself goes through its history, pointing out that it was rung in 1760 to announce the coronation of King George III.
