In regard to the category marker of "US Government": The National Academies are not a part of the US Government. In fact it is pretty central to their mission that they are an independent, non-governmental agency. I recommend that this label be removed.--Porthos 16:27, 17 July 2007 (EDT)

Not to quibble, but I actually work for the NAS. The Institute of Medicine, specifically. We operate in the same manner as a contractor; when a government agency (or even a private sector group) requests a study, a contract is drawn up and compensation is agreed to. We are funded in exactly the same manner as a Senate plumber, and I don't think you'd call him part of the government.--Porthos 09:53, 19 July 2007 (EDT)
  • I don't take it as quibbling. The Bureau of the Census does the cost of living surveys for Treasury, but I still think they are the government! Its a symbiotic relationship, I guess, like the Postal Service. --Sysop-TK /MyTalk 10:39, 19 July 2007 (EDT)

Hijacking

I'm interested to know from SkipJohnson how the "hijacking" he mentions in his recent edit took place? Members of the Academies are elected. There's no way for an outsider to "force" his or her way in.--Porthos 16:52, 20 August 2007 (EDT)
