Chile is a country in South America.
In 1973, a CIA-backed coup replaced the democratically elected government of Salvador Allende with the fascist dictatorship of General Pinochet. Under Pinochet's reign around 3000 people were murdered or went missing. In spite of being a murderous tyrant, however, Pinochet had several friends in high places, notably Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher.
