Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland is a country that is a member of the United Kingdom, which also includes England, Scotland, and Wales. Geographically, Northern Ireland occupies the northern portion of the island of Ireland, with the Republic of Ireland occupying the remainder of the island.

Northern Ireland was created by the Anglo-Irish Treaty of 1922, which concluded the Irish War of Independence. Some Irish people wished to leave the United Kingdom, leading to the short-lived rebellion that began at Easter, 1916, and lasted for one week. Many of the rebellion's leaders were subsequently hanged by the British. While the rebellion initially had relatively little popular support, the execution of its leaders led to a great deal of additional support for its goals.
