A noun is a word used to name a person, animal, place, thing, or an abstract idea. Nouns are usually the first words which small children learn.[Citation Needed] The italicized words in the following sentences are all nouns:

"Russia is the largest country in the world."

"Global Warming is of great concern to environmentalists."

"Thomas Jefferson was a president."

A proper noun is a noun that is capitalized.
