Ambassador

Ambassador is a diplomatic official of the highest rank appointed as representative by one government. The US did not appoint ambassadors until 1893. Until the latter half of the twentieth century, most American ambassadors were political appointees. In Western Europe, Canada, the People's Republic of China, and the Soviet Union similar designations are made.
